What is Reiki?
Reiki is an ancient healing art which was revived in the 1800’s by Mikao Usui. The origins of Reiki are, however, much
more ancient. It is widely believed that our far distant ancestors were naturally attuned to this form of healing and
that we, only now, are gently being awakened to re-accept this form of natural healing process.
Although revived by Mikao Usui, this method is thought to have been widely used in the ancient civilisation, known as
Mu.
When Mu (so the legend goes) disintegrated, due to Earth changes, remnants of that culture & knowledge spread to the areas
we now know as Tibet & India. Mikao Usui’s quest to understand more of the origins of Jesus’ & Buddha’s healing methods
led him into the ancient texts relating to Shiva and the teachings of India.
Reiki healing is the transference of Universal Energy (freely available in the cosmos) to those who request and need it.
The word Reiki is comprised of two Japanese words Rei (and) Ki.
"REI" translates as "ghost" or "spirit" and the meaning is thought to represent the essence of life spirit and creative
wisdom existent in the cosmos - Spirit Guides. All cultures have a name for this essence. Whether it be the "Great Spirit" (Wakan-Tanka), "Ueueteot", "Ra", "Ahura Mazda", "Yahweh", "Lord", "God", "Buddha", "Allah", "Christ" or the many other words which are or have been used to describe the source of creation.
"KI" translates as "vapour" and represents the energy that is existent and flowing through all manner of living things.
Plants, animals and humans have and need this energy in order to survive. We receive Ki from a whole range of wholesome
sources. It is in the air that we breathe and the sunshine that falls upon the earth. It is in food and also in that
strange phenomena we call “sleep”.
It is Ki energy that is channeled, often helped by attending Spirit Guides.
Ki leaves the physical body when death occurs and Rei rests, considering lessons learned and kama.
It is important to remember that Reiki is not a religious experience, neither does it attempt to compromise any
religious, agnostic or atheist persuasion. Neither is it evil or 'dark'. It is totaly natural and always works for the good.
When is Reiki needed?
Only you can answer this question. You do not need to feel un-well to benefit from Reiki - on the contrary, Reiki
is highly recommended at all times. However, we have all experienced times in our lives when we feel low - both physically,
mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Often, we naturally recover from these feelings. We begin to improve and life
becomes enjoyable, once more. Sometimes, we find it difficult to regain our ‘lost’ energy and inner strength and may
resort to other methods of ‘healing’. Drugs; comfort eating; alcohol; sex: spending etc. Anything that gives us a quick &
pleasurable ‘fix’. Such an approach provides only a temporary respite of our ‘low’ feelings. Reiki gives us the basic
energy requirements to assist all of our needs and will, over time, improve our life, naturally.
Please remember, Reiki is a natural therapy. Few fully understands how, or indeed why it gives us the benefits it
undoubtedly does. We only know that it does produce a beneficial affect and that it works on the majority of those who
request it.
How is Reiki given?
Reiki is never given, without it first being asked for. The universal love energy does not come from the Reiki therapist.
The therapist is merely a channel (conduit) for the energy and it is the client who firstly asks for the Reiki session
and then chooses (unconsciously) to receive the necessary amount of energy during the session. Reiki is given with the
client fully clothed and often covered (for warmth) throughout the session. The process does not necessitate the touching
of intimate parts of the body, although the therapist may lay hands on the coccyx (tail bone). A Reiki session lasts for
between 1 to 1.5 hours
How often do I need Reiki?
This depends upon how low you feel. In severe cases as many as two per day may be needed but it is more usual to need
(and indeed, benefit from) Reiki once or twice each week in the early stages of the ‘low’, reducing to once or twice
each month and then less frequent as you recover. Remember, you do not need to feel low to benefit from Reiki. Reiki is
good for you at any time - especially when you are feeling well!
